JAPHET Mlauzi, a musical product of renowned afro-jazz icon, Jeys Marabini, is working with his mentor on his third album which is expected to be released soon.

Jeys has over the past few years made it his mandate to nurture and develop the music industry by mentoring a number of up-and-coming artistes in the city.

Marabini, who needs no introduction in the industry, has always been supportive of up-and-coming artistes in and outside the city and is one musician who has been calling for unity of purpose among artistes for the betterment of the industry. Mlauzi, popularly known as Hwabaraty, made his debut into the showbiz industry under an arts development agency — Amawumbo in 2000.

While attached there Mlauzi took part in a number plays, which saw him touring countries such as Spain, France and other parts of Europe. In an interview, Mlauzi said he met Marabini, who took him under his wings, in 2010 and has since learnt a lot as an artiste.

“I have learnt a lot of things from Marabini, among all he taught me to be humble as a human being. He has also taught me to be of use to the community, hence I now do a lot of voluntary work in a number of places,” he said.

In his music, Mlauzi makes use of traditional musical instruments, such as the mbira and drums.

“In most of my songs I use traditional instruments because I believe that modern instruments are too artificial for me. I want to promote my culture and at the same time show my peers that traditional instruments are not old-fashioned,” said Mlauzi.

Mlauzi further noted that Marabini was more of a father figure to him than just an artiste, since he consults him, seeking advice on musical and non-musical issues.

“With Marabini, I have been exposed to many different places and I have met many people. He has been helping me greatly in my music and many of my songs that pass as big hits are because of his touch,” said Mlauzi.

He said he was working in collaboration with Marabini for his pending project.

In his up-coming album, Mlauzi noted that he was working with artistes such as Ex-mile.

In an interview, Marabini described Mlauzi as a hard-working individual who was proud of his background.

“I have never seen a European trying to be like an African but so many Africans desire to be like Europeans; people have to appreciate their culture. What Hwabaraty is doing is a good thing. I hope he also teaches others,” he said.
