Nust wins AHFZ sports gala

NATIONAL University of Science and Technology (Nust), won the Aids Healthcare Foundations Zimbabwe sports gala recently held at United College of Education (UCE).

The teams that participated in the competitions were Nust, UCE, Bulawayo Polytechnic and Westgate.

Football, volleyball, netball, handball and basketball were part of the sporting disciplines contested for at the event.

Bulawayo Polytechnic clinched gold in the men’s handball while UCE claimed first place in the women’s category. In volleyball, Nust and Bulawayo Polytechnic were the winners in women and men’s categories respectively, while Nust were victorious in netball.

Nust excelled in basketball claiming first place in both men and women’s groups. In football, Nust defeated Westgate 1-0 in their first match, drew their second match against Bulawayo Polytechnic 1-1 and beat Westgate to lead the group.

Nust were hailed champions of the sports gala after attaining more gold medals than any other team.

The teams that won gold in each of the sporting codes received kits, balls and prize money courtesy of the AHFZ.

AHFZ prevention manager Clever Taderera commended the athletes from the institutions for their participation.

“We decided to engage students from tertiary institutions around Bulawayo in our first anniversary celebrations and the resounding success of the event was owed to their participation,” he said.

“We managed to achieve our main objective which was interaction through sport, while delivering our services to students such as HIV testing and condom distribution’’ he added.
