THERE was an outpouring of support and sympathy for Zimbabwe-born rapper Nadia Nakai after the murder of her South African boyfriend, AKA, in Durban on Friday night, with rumours also circulating on social media platforms that she is carrying the slain wordsmith’s child.
AKA (35), was gunned down together with a friend, while on Florida Road in Durban, where the rapper had gone for a performance partly in celebration of his birthday.
KwaZulu-Natal police said the multi-award winner and an unidentified man were leaving a restaurant on Florida Road when the suspects opened fire on them. Two murder dockets are being investigated.
While some social media highlighted the fact that the death of the rapper would be a devastating blow to his daughter Kairo, other were sympathetic to Nakai, a rapper with Zimbabwean roots.
Others claimed that Nakai, who has seemingly grown closer to AKA over the past year, appearing on many of his social media post, was pregnant and faced the prospect of raising a child alone.
“If Nadia is really expecting AKA’s baby like the streets have been reporting all morning, then this is going to shatter her even more, she really loved this man, and they were effortlessly doing this love thing so clean, it was beautiful to witness,” tweeted one @JohnsonAwalle .
The two were secretly seeing each other before rumours of their relationship surfaced last year. In March, AKA confirmed that he and Nakai, once arch-nemesis Cassper Nyovest’s protégé, were seeing each other.
Of his relationship with Nakai, AKA in October said, “I am in a fantastic place. Love is in the air. Nadia and I have been together for about a year and just enjoying each other . . . Music always unites us. Both of us being both artistes complement our relationship.”
