OVER 100 athletes are expected to be part of the seventh edition of the Liquor Hub Fun Run which is set for this morning.

The race will start and end at the Liquor Hub on Fife Street between 4th and 5th avenues and is being sponsored to the tune of R50 000. Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) official Watson Madenyika said all was in place ahead of the meet whose proceeds will go towards charity.

Top athletes that have registered so far are previous winner Olivia Chitate and Caroline Mhandu for the females. Moses Tarakinyu, Tendai Zimuto, and Wellington Varevi are the big names in the male category that will be part of the race. Registration for the fun run, the last major athletics event in Bulawayo closed last night.

“As of this morning (yesterday) we had 85 athletes who had already registered. But this being the last day of registration we are hopeful that the numbers will increase immensely. As Bab we are ready for the event. We are grateful to the sponsor who has supported us each year. We are also happy that the sponsor has vowed that resources permitting this event will soon meet international standards, as required by World Athletics,” said Madenyika.

Winners of the 10km race for the male and female will pocket R3 500 each. The top three in the junior men and women’s categories will get R1 250, R800 and R600 respectively. For the wheelchair sections, the top two in both male and female will walk away with R1 500 and R1 000.

Athletics clubs, schools and companies were invited for the race, whose proceeds from registration fees are donated to charities in the Matabeleland region. Raj Modi, the Liquor Hub Wholesale Centre proprietor announced last Saturday that R50 000 worth of groceries will be donated to various charities.
