THE Zimbabwe National Road Authority has put in place measures to update the Lothian tollgate which is along Masvingo-Roy highway, which is one of the parastatal’s cash cows.

The tollgate which is about 40 kilometres from Masvingo was ranked number five out of 22 tollgates in Zimbabwe in terms of revenue collection as it was able to surpass a target of $55 million by collecting $66 million last year. During the first quarter of 2022, the tollgate was ranked second out of 22 and surpassed the $26 million target by collecting $28 million.

Speaking after the tour of the tollgate by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development on Thursday, Zinara director of administration and human resources Mr Gilfern Moyo said that they were in the process of upgrading the tollgate.

“As Zinara we are now moving to upgrade this site. We have started with the security fence and we have done the plinths, installation of a back office as well and the installation of the centre booth which will allow for the revenue collection system.

We are well on course in terms of revamping and upgrading this tollgate into one of our best collecting sites. We will see the deployment of a centre booth and the back office, the stage which will make the application of a system. So we are well on course and probably in two months’ time we will be done with this tollgate.

The tender has since been awarded,” he said.

The Parliamentarians bemoaned the lack of security and proper structures at the tollgate. The committee was on a tour to assess the roads and tollgates. Acting Chairperson for the committee Honourable Girovah Dzepasi said they were  happy with the rehabilitation of the Harare-Masvingo highway. He said President Mnangagwa was doing his best to ensure that the roads are looking good.
