MORE than $36 000 worth of property was destroyed by strong winds at two schools in the flood prone Sipepa area in Tsholotsho District last month, officials have said.
The damaged property at Jimila Primary and Secondary schools included classroom roofs and cottages.
Tsholotsho Ward Six councillor, Mthetho Sikhosana appealed for help from well wishers saying work on repairs has not been done.
“At Jimila Primary School asbestos on one classroom were blown away by winds that hit the area mid-December last year.
“At the secondary school that is where the severe damage was noted with roofs on three classroom blocks and a teachers’ cottage damaged.
We are appealing for help because schools have opened and nothing has been done yet,” said Clr Sikhosana.
Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director Mr Jabulani Mpofu confirmed the destruction, saying property valued at $36 000 was destroyed at the secondary school with that worth $200 damaged at the primary school.
He said efforts to get the schools repaired quickly were being made adding that parents and responsible authorities were working on the matter.
He encouraged district offices to quickly report such incidents so that aid would be given on time.
“We have so far received donation of $1 000 from Nkayi Primary School, villagers and responsible authorities are working towards repairs.
“We kindly ask district offices to report such incidents on time so that assistance can be quickly provided,” he said.
