STRIKERS were goal shy in the first tournament of the Dumisani Foundation Football League when the matches took place at Gifford High School last Saturday.

Six goals were scored in the six boys’ matches played on the day while the girls’ fixture only produced one goal. Defending champions Mtshabezi defeated Gifford 1-0 while Milton won 2-1 over Gifford in the only wins recorded on the day by the boys. The other four matches concluded in stalemates. Entumbane girls defeated their Mtshabezi counterparts 1-0.

Arthur Mpuli, the league’s coordinator said things went well on the day with the best part being the presence of girls who are playing in the format for the first time.

“The tournament went on very well with the major highlight being the presence of girls soccer from Mtshabezi and Entumbane. Games finished well on time to enable the travelling team to go back early. The level of the competition was high with both the boys and the girls exhibiting some entertaining soccer,’’ Mpuli said.

He showed his appreciation to the coaches for getting the players ready despite the fact that all they were involved in athletics. Mpuli also expressed his gratitude to the United Kingdom-based sponsor, Dumisani Ndlovu for the wonderful work that he is doing.

“We have to applaud the coaches for preparing the teams well despite being involved in athletics for a better part of the term. The sponsor, Dumisani Ndlovu deserves a pat on the back for the wonderful job he is doing. The next round robin games will be held on 3 May at Mtshabezi,’’ said Mpuli.

The final tournament is set for Mtshabezi on 4 August in the presence of Ndlovu who is expected to bring a big contingent from the Diaspora including his former students from the UK.
