Winter dressing

WINTER is slowly approaching and this year looks like it’s going to be a cold one. So are you going to rediscover that pair of boots you have had for 4+ years, somewhere in your shoe closet? Are you going to dust that coat which was given to you by that special aunt in UK? You are probably right to think it’s okay to do the above, yes, a coat can be worn over a number of years and boots and sneakers and those timbers which you keep repairing the soles every two years.

However, you need to keep up with fashion trends no matter the season. The same reason why we are not wearing hipsters and shakira skirts in summer should be the same reason why you can’t keep wearing the same coat every year. Trends change, colours and silhouettes are updated every now and then. Winter is not about changing your entire wardrobe, you can wear some of the old stuff only if its not four-five years old. If it’s of sentimental value we might understand, but don’t wear a pair of boots till they are tired.

With these winter must haves you won’t go wrong:

Over the knee boots

Warm and chic — the perfect winter combination! Over the knee boots can be dressed down with jeans and a jumper/dress top for a casual daytime look or glammed up with a skirt or mini dress at night.

Turtleneck top

Investing in a polo will ensure that your neck is nice and snug all winter long! This style looks good with anything whether it be paired with a sweater and sleeveless dress, or simply worn on its own with jeans. Turtlenecks have been trending the past winter as well. Black, olive, beige (nude) and coffee are the colours to go for.

Fedora hat

Although a hat may not come to mind when thinking of winter must haves but a wool or felt fedora hat is a great way to keep warm without sacrificing on style as this accessory can make any outfit look more put together. This is also a great look for when you are having a bad day and your weave is in a state. Fedora hats have a way to make an outfit look very stylish without trying way too hard.

Knitted jumper dress

For those who are friends with the cold they can pull this look with just over the knee boots. This look is to be worn with skinny jeans or thick warm leggings/tights, you can then pop your favourite winter coat on top, which can be removed once inside. Choose from a form fitting style or a relaxed version. I know we all want to look sexy even on a cold day but better warm than sexy for a day than the-flu-that-does-not-go-away the next couple of months.

Leather jacket/rider jacket

A leather jacket is crucial for every winter wardrobe and adds instant edge and coolness to any outfit. Toss it over your jeans and tee on the weekend or blouse and pants for the night, this jacket has the power to transform any winter outfit from drab to fab! Black is always edgier compared to other colours, but do play around with other colours you may like them.

Blanket wrap scarf (over-sized scarf)

The blanket wrap scarf is a chic and effortless addition to any winter outfit and the bigger, the better we say! There are countless ways to style this cold weather accessory, either thrown carelessly over your shoulder or wrapped around multiple times. The printed ones seem to be making waves overseas, checks, stripes, animal print, graphics: whatever work for you. Grannies always have these kinda scarves, so you can “borrow” for the winter or forever lol.

Statement coat

In winter your outerwear is the most important aspect of your wardrobe, so why not make a statement? A statement coat will add a pop of colour to any neutral or all-black outfit. Coats are winter; winter is all about different coats. Having a number of them is definitely a plus. Why? Because wearing one coat everyday for the next 3-4 months in a row will make it old. Coats cannot be washed regularly, like your t-shirt. Coats are special because not only are they warm but they are expensive. Get yourself at least three-four coats a year.

Cashmere sweater

Nothing says off-duty chic like a cashmere crewneck sweater. This chic layering piece can be as easy to dress up as it is to dress down. This sweater looks great with a collared shirt protruding from underneath and goes with everything including midi-skirts, jeans, printed trousers and leather pants. And, sweaters are for those who cannot afford statement coats, which is still alright because the point is keeping warm and looking stylish (sounds impossible I know). Get as many sweaters as you can. NOT OVERSIZED ones or your boyfriends’, PLEASE! Being chic, fab and stylish doesn’t include drab or sloppy somewhere. Get your size and style it up however, you wish to.

Enjoy dressing up this winter, do keep warm by layering, and play around with fur coats, scarves and bold colours. Keep your winter clothes clean, make sure they are warm and of course STYLISH.
