Confusion rocks bakery, milling industry

The Sunday News

CONFUSION is reigning supreme in the bakery and milling industry as bread prices have remained the same although it was promised that it would go down after the Grain Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe announced a 10 percent reduction in flour prices two weeks ago.
The reduction was in response to a Government directive to industry to adjust their pricing models.
However, National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe president Mr Givemore Mesoemvura told Sunday Business on Thursday that they were still buying flour at old prices.

“As of now we have not had any price reduction from flour suppliers, we are still being invoiced at old prices,” said Mr Mesoemvura.
He said he was not sure why the millers were still selling their flour at the old price even though they announced that they had reduced the price.
“I am not sure of the reason as to the delay. But they are supposed to have communicated with the individual bakeries which has not happened yet.

“We welcome the price reduction on the flour, one of the components that go into bread making” said Mr Mesoemvura.
When contacted for comment GMAZ president Mr Tafadzwa Musarara said he was not aware of what was happening on the ground as he was out of the country.

“That’s not correct at all. I am currently attending the KPCS plenary in Luanda and unable to consult and give a well informed comment,” said Mr Musarara.

The announcement on the reduction of flour prices had been met with joy by consumers who anticipated the price of bread and other flour products to go down.

The price of bread is a dollar at most retail outlets although other bakeries like Bakers Inn have reduced it to 90 cents.
