Controversy dogs cricket elections

A storm is brewing over the election of a Zimbabwe Cricket employee Vumindaba Moyo to the post of Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association chairman.
Moyo was one of the three individuals announced by ZC representative Trevor Mutangadura to have met the criteria of contesting the hot seat at Queens Sports Cub last Friday. The other successful candidates were Godwin Dube of Emakhandeni Cricket Club and Matabeleland Tuskers physiotherapist James Condon.

Interestingly, former interim chairman Gary Nyumbu was disqualified as he could not meet the criterion which was allegedly not communicated to all aspiring candidates through recognised channels and on time.
The elevation means Moyo can actually stand for election onto the ZC board, a development which will effectively make him (Moyo) his own boss.

Nyumbu was together with a member of his former board Ambrose Meyers co-opted to the Moyo led set up.
In an interview soon after being removed from his post, a clearly dejected Nyumbu said he was saddened because he did not understand how he was ruled out of contention. What made it more painful for Nyumbu was that he had managed to secure sponsorship for the BMCA First League from Titan Law, a Harare firm owned by his childhood friend Gerald Mlotshwa.

“I was disqualified, was told my documents were not in order, I am really disappointed but I will work with the new chairman,’’ said Nyumbu who took over the reins on an interim basis following the resignation of Esther Chagadama.
Moyo could not be contacted for comment as his mobile phone was not reachable.

Ironically Chagadama’s assumption of the BMCA leadership was also mired in controversy because she was not only a ZC employee but was not from Bulawayo.

That scenario saw her unceremoniously step down from her post last year.
Contacted for comment on the issue ZC media and communications manager Lovemore Banda yesterday said the returning officers left Harare for various poll centres last Friday and will submit their reports as from tomorrow (Monday).

“They will hand in their reports from Monday, only when we read the relevant report can we comment,’’ said Banda.
The newly elected provincial chairpersons are expected to meet soon to vote for a new ZC board.
