DECORATING and designing a small bedroom can be daunting especially when you are not well versed with decorating ideas. To put your mind at ease there are so many ways to make sure that your space looks beautiful and spacious regardless of its size. Using a peaceful palette, great lighting and simple-yet-smart storage solutions, you can meet the challenge with style and ease.

This week’s column will explore ways of decorating a small bedroom, in the process creating space.

Every room needs a focal point . . . an eye-catching spot that draws people’s attention. When decorating a small space, many a times your eyes might be attracted to the window which is most likely to be your focal point . . . while in most bedrooms the head of the bed is usually used as a focal point. This can be a challenge considering that there is the window and the head of the bed vis-à-vis the small space. You can overcome this challenge by making these two strong elements complement each other and not compete for attention.

Simply place the bed in from of the window to combine these two cohesively. Also, dressing either of the two with a neutral colour can also work. By so doing you will be withdrawing the other from the competition for attention and the other will become the focal point. For example you can dress the bed with a neutral colour like grey. You can also amplify the bed with the arrangement of pillows.

Mirrors can also be a perfect focal point. Using mirrors will add depth and dimension to a small bedroom because of their unique ability to act like additional windows. Hanging several smaller mirrors in a group can add lots of visual interest, while using one large mirror will instantly create the illusion of more square footage. A mirror can also be used as a focal point just like a window.

Colours also play a pivotal role in organising a small bedroom. You have two choices, either go with dark and cosy colours such as brown or enhance daylight with barely dressed windows and bright colours on the wall, such as cloud white or sunshine yellow.

Being well aware that your space is small, though it may be tempting to buy the biggest bed to feather a luxurious nest — just know that this may cause a more cramped feel. Instead, choose a bed with a small stature that won’t choke the room, such as an iron bed with a see-through headboard and footboard. Or pick a bed with no footboard at all, such as a platform or storage bed. Doing so will keep the middle of your room open, making it feel larger. — Additional information from Online sources.
