HIGHLANDERS FC is set to commemorate the club’s 90th anniversary with a visit to the grave of one of the club’s founding father, the late Albert Khumalo in Gwatemba, Insiza District in Matabebeleland South on Saturday.

The visit follows a similar Heritage Tour to Rhodes Khumalo’s grave in Grahamstown, South Africa earlier this year.

Bosso@90 Celebrations Committee chairman Luke Mnkandla said they were retracing the footsteps of the club to bring the spotlight back to those who formed the football club in 1926 as part of this year’s celebrations. He expressed hope that the visit will get the club’s multitude of supporters appreciate the club’s history.

“We believe such commemorations give us the opportunity to reflect on our past and unearth our history and some people might not know how the football club came into existence. Highlanders is more than just a football team hence we decided that celebratory activities would go beyond the normal sporting activities.

“Many people consider Bosso to have great cultural value to them hence we want people to know those who gave birth to this big club ,” said Mnkandla, adding that however, they would not be engaging in any traditional ceremonies or rituals.

“We are finalising with the guests that have been invited to see if they would be able to make it but I know for certain there are going to be several ministers, MPs and chiefs who will be led by Chief Vezi Maduna Mafu. We will visit the grave to see where the club’s founder is resting but the main activities include entertainment provided by a local music outfit, traditional dance groups and poets among others would be held at Highway Stopover, Emapengani, Malole in Gwatemba,” said Mnkandla.

He said they are working with the Filabusi Highlanders chapter in organising the event and they expect lots of meat to be available for those who will attend. Mnkandla said they are finalising transport arrangements for those travelling for the event from Bulawayo.
