IYASA and German arts act, Theatre Strahl bring their collaborative piece, “BLACK &WHITE ain’t no colours” to Zimbabwe with three showings on the card.

The play premièred in Berlin, Germany in July and will be first shown in Bulawayo before being taken to Harare.

The show that seeks to fight racial prejudice will be shown during Intwasa on Wednesday and Friday at Eveline High School.

The two groups embarked on research as they sought views of young people on race and racial stereotypes.

Theatre Strahl did the research in Zimbabwe while Iyasa was tasked with doing the research in Germany.

The result of the research was the play “BLACK &WHITE ain’t no colours”, which is tailored for young audience in the generation.

In the play, three German and three Zimbabwean actors find themselves in a transition.

Caught between two worlds, in-between their cultures they build a utopian society of their own. In a humorous manner, the cast employs dance and music to deal with societal prejudices and cultural diversities.

Iyasa director, Nkululeko Dube, who composed the music for and choreographed the play said after a successful run in Germany they are hoping for similar success locally.

“The play was well received in Germany and due to demand we have already lined up other shows. In the play we seek to answer several questions that include ‘How do prejudices and cultural diversities affect our perspectives when we encounter new environments and different people? Do we create new images?’ With courage and honesty, the artistes meet each other eye to eye and deal with the topics of hope, fear, freedom, community, faith and money,” he said.

The show was directed by German, Anna Vera Kelle and members of the cast are Isheanesu Caroline Dzvairo, Beate Fischer, Newman Trindad Gondwe, Dorcas Ngwenya, Derek Nowak and Raphael Schmischke.

On 7 October the play will show in Harare at Theatre in the Park.
