NEWLY-APPOINTED National Art Gallery in Bulawayo — Art Attack facilitator, Kingdom Williams has pledged to bring a new profound flair to the program. Art Attack is a component of the art gallery’s Khula Udweba initiative, which was introduced two years ago, particularly targeting at nurturing young artists. Art Attack runs for a week during the school holidays, giving students enough time to acquire skills in art.

Williams said his intention was to use art to bring about social, economic and political development.
“l intend to improve a lot of things in this programme like the number of participants and this year children showed a better attendances than before, as 14 students turned out to participating in the programme,” said Williams.

He mentioned that he had completely changed the curriculum in a move that he said would improve the understanding of art by young artistes.
“Since I started running the program, l made a raft of changes that are different from the previous program.
‘For instance I now mainly focus on four major courses that include cultural dynamic and art history, literature drawing, drawing using letters, numbers and shapes and also Japanese art which is called origami design and paper folding,” said Williams.

This holiday’s edition ran under the theme Art and Craft Holiday Camp AND took place from 17-20 August.
Williams also said after the training, participants would be required to produce art pieces, which will be used for a children’s art exhibition that has been slated for 3 September at the gallery.

Williams added that the exhibition would run for a month and was inviting schools to organise trips for children to visit the gallery.
“At the exhibition each student will come up with a tree origami and exhibit their five pieces and on literature drawing there will be one joint piece big drawing done by all the participants,” said Williams.
