EXCITING squash budding star, Ryan Gwidzima leaves the country on 27 August to enrol at the prestigious Wycliffe College in the United Kingdom where it is expected that he will develop into a world class player.

The 12-year-old, with assistance of the Promise Ncube chaired Ryan Gwidzima Trust heads off to England to complete his primary school at Wycliffe and then proceed to high school at the same institution. Gwidzima has just returned from Cape Town, South Africa where he was the Under-15 champion at the Africa Junior Squash Open last Sunday with come from behind 3-2 triumph over Kameron Jinnah last Sunday. He is excited about going to England as he believes that will improve his chances of becoming a professional squash player.

“I am really excited, I just hope I am gonna do my best, let’s hope I am gonna enjoy there. I want to go there and work hard and be a better person in life. I want to be a professional squash player,’’ Gwidzima said.

He expressed his gratefulness to all those who made his trip to South Africa possible, with the youngster actually hoping to defend his title next year.

“I would like to thank a lot of people for letting me go to the tournament, I am very happy to win this tournament and let’s hope I can win it again next year,’’ he said.

His father Langton, who travelled with him to Cape Town as his coach was delighted his son’s win and is also excited about him heading to England.

“I am so happy, it was so nice seeing him winning the big title, it was very good for him and for me as a coach. I had to go and help him in the areas where he was losing and try to lift his spirit up. I am so happy, it is good, he has got an opportunity to go and prove what he can do, I hope he will do well,’’ the father said.

Ncube strongly believes that by sending the youngster to Wycliffe College, they have given him the best opportunity to become a world class player.

“We are confident that by sending him to Wycliffe College we’ve done the best for his career in that he will improve his game and become a true world beater in squash,’’ Ncube said. — @Mdawini_29
