A woman from Bulawayo has appeared in court for allegedly defrauding a popular pizza company — Pizza Hut — of more than $5 000 and US$840, through duplicating outdated point of sale receipts.

Yolanda Madanhi (20), of Greenhill suburb, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Tinashe Tashaya facing charges of fraud last week.

She was slapped with a 24-month jail term of which three months were suspended for five years on condition she does not commit any offence of a similar nature.

The remaining nine months were suspended on condition she restitutes Pizza Hut a sum of $5 743, 81 before 16 August 2019 and also perform 420 hours of community service at Hillside Police Station.

Presenting the case for the State, Mrs Memory Matare told the court that Madanhi was employed as a till operator at Pizza Hut situated at Bradfield Shopping Centre.

“On 16 June 2019, Madanhi performed cash transactions for customers who would have bought pizza using either RTGS, US dollars or point of sale transactions for customers who will be using ATM cards and made sales of                                                                                            US$ 2 871,91 using a Point Sale. She at that time handed over outdated point of sales duplicate receipts when in actual fact she had performed cash sales of the same values and therefore converted the money to her own use,” said Mrs Matare.

Mrs Matare told the court that instead of handing over the sales at the end of her shift, Madanhi took the cash and generated a trend of using outdated receipts and equivalent the cash she would have made.

“Madanhi would present the actual point of sale receipt to give false values, which led to her arrest,” said Mrs Matare.

The court heard that by means of this misrepresentation Pizza Hut suffered an actual prejudice of $5 743, 81.
