A DOMINICAN Convent High School pupil from Bulawayo has been honoured for coming out best in the world in the 2014 Cambridge isiZulu Ordinary Level examination.
Buhe Mcupi Ndebele (16) emerged as the best in the world and was honoured for her exceptional effort at the annual Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards held in Harare at the beginning of the month.

She attained an A plus for the subject, which means she passed the examination with at least a 97 percent grade.
Buhe also got four As, two Bs and two Cs in the other O-level subjects she sat for last year.

She said she had decided to take English Literature, Geography and Business Studies at A-level.
“I took up isiZulu when I was in Form Three because I thought I would wind up at a South African university. It would be an advantage for me for communication purposes as it is one of the most spoken languages in South Africa,” she said.

Buhe said she was pleased with herself for acing the subject, as there was a misconception that A schools had poor results.

“I don’t believe the misconception that A schools produce poor results and this is proof that there is a valid education in A schools in Zimbabwe. In actual fact, the school assisted me in terms of exposure through school trips. I was exposed to the various cultures of South Africa through the school,” said Buhe.

She noted that she was grateful to her school and teacher for equipping her with vital knowledge and to her parents for the support.

“If it wasn’t for my school, teacher and parents, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this,” she said.
Her parents said they were proud of her achievement.

The Dominican Convent High School head was unavailable for comment but a teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the school was pleased with Buhe’s achievement.

“We are happy and are celebrating Buhe’s achievement. This is testimony that hard work pays. We are proud of her and of course all the other pupils who were able to raise the school name.

“This is not just an individual achievement, but it also stands as a testimony of the school’s academic excellence that has been made possible by pupils and staff members,” said the teacher.

The teacher said this was not the first time Convent had produced outstanding results.
