POLICE in Plumtree are looking for an assailant who killed a 68-year-old Bulilima granny in cold blood two weeks ago after axing her to death at her doorstep.

Gogo Jesta Sibanda was killed two weeks ago after her assailant pounced on her when she was alone at her homestead and the motive of the murder is still unknown. At the time of her death, she lived with her Grade Five grandchild in Gwambe area of Bulilima.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed that they were still looking for the suspect.

“We haven’t arrested anyone in connection with the murder. We are still hunting for the suspect. The body of the deceased was taken for post mortem at United Bulawayo Hospitals,” said Insp Ndebele.

When Gogo Sibanda met her fate, she was alone at home after the grandchild had visited a relative in another village. Bulilima East representative in the National Assembly, Cde Mathias Ndlovu described Gogo Sibanda as a good person.

A villager who spoke on condition of anonymity said Gogo Sibanda’s body was found at the doorstep of her bedroom early in the morning on 2 February by her grandchild who had returned home to prepare to go to school.

“On Thursday (1 February) the grandchild who is doing Grade Five visited Gogo Sibanda’s younger sister in a village across the river. However, he was cut off from crossing back after he found the river in flood and he slept there.

“In the morning he rushed home to change into his school uniform and that’s when he found his grandmother’s body,” said the villager.
