Hwange, Dete men jailed for assaulting women

A HWANGE man will rue the day he severely assaulted his neighbour over a debt of US$6 after he was jailed for 15 months.
Doubt Chitani Mathe (40) of Dingani Village, Dete under chief Nelukoba in Hwange district attacked Tazviona Chiweshe (52) with fists accusing her of delaying in paying back the money she owed him.

He was slapped with a 15 months prison term when he appeared before Hwange Provincial magistrate, Miss Fungai Dzimiri. Six months of his were conditionally suspended for five years meaning he will serve an effective nine months behind bars.

It is the State’s case that on 5 April 2022 at around 0945hrs Mathe arrived at Chiweshe’s homestead demanding US$6 which she owed him. She informed him that she did not have the money owing to a relative’s funeral she had attended in Rusape which had drained her financially before committing to pay him once she got the money.

This however, did not go down well with Mathe who assaulted Chiweshe with fists several times resulting in her sustaining a swollen right eye and injuries all over the body. She fled into her bedroom but Mathe followed her threatening to kill her before leaving the homestead after a while.

Chiweshe went on to file a report at ZRP Dete before being referred to St Patrick’s hospital for treatment where a medical report was obtained and presented in court as evidence. Miss Chido Tshuma appeared for the State.

Meanwhile in a related case a 36-year-old man from of Kanejola Village, Msuna area in Hwange was sentenced to six months for contravening Section 3 (1) (a) as read with the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16.

Finest Muzamba assaulted his 63-year-old mother, Lindiwe Tshuma of Matonga Village in the same area for asking him about an incident that involved his girlfriend. Muzamba who was denying the charge was convicted by Hwange Provincial magistrate, Miss Fungai Dzimiri and sentenced to six months which were wholly suspended for five years. However, his six months suspended sentence from a similar offence was brought into effect and he will serve an effective six months jail term.

Prosecuting, Miss Chido Tshuma told the court that on 15 April 2022 at around 0130hrs Muzamba visited his mother at her homestead where she found her asleep. She woke up to attend to him by opening her door.

However, in a fit of rage Muzamba then kicked her once on the face and she fell before accusing her of confronting his girlfriend to complain about what she had done to him some time ago.

Tshuma who sustained a cut on the upper part of the right eye as a result of the assault reported the matter to the police.

Meanwhile another Hwange man landed himself in trouble after assaulting an 18-year-old teenager whom he accused of urinating on his hedge. Bonaventure Sitali (33) of G31 Lwendulu Village was slapped with nine months imprisonment for assaulting Humphrey Ndlovu. The same magistrate conditionally suspended three months of the sentence for five years resulting in a 6 months jail term.

The court heard that on 6 March at around 1800hrs Ndlovu proceeded to Sitali’s place of residence to visit his uncle. While there he went outside and urinated on the hedge. A misunderstanding arose between the two resulting in Sitali striking Ndlovu with a brick once on the face. The teenager filed a police report leading to Sitali’s arrest. He was referred to Hwange Colliery hospital for treatment. Miss Belinda Bure represented the State.
