Letters to the Editor: Let’s not turn Hwange town to an eyesore

THIS success of a disease control programme lies on the willingness and desire of the concerned population or community to improve their health standard.

A community that co-operates, value the importance of control programmes and believes in achieving set objectives will certainly control the targeted disease efficiently and effectively within a short period of time as compared to a non-co-operating community.

The biggest challenge comes from human behaviour and perennial habits that are difficult to change and control.

The Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) Estates Department is working tirelessly to keep Hwange town clean but others pose health hazards by posing garbage in our gardens. Remember Hwange town is now dubbed one of the smartest, cleanliness and tidy towns in the country.

Let’s not turn our town to an eyesore. Designated dumpsites should be used. Another issue is on the ablution facilities, people should make use of the water filled in 210 litre containers after answering a call of nature as some flushing cistern were vandalised.

The Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) Estates Department have opted to use the drums in some areas in ablution facilities for flushing purposes. Let’s use the water in our ablutions effectively for our hygiene.

This is so common in settings where facilities such as toilets are communally used or shared. Instead of effectively using the facilities, people tend to abuse the facilities such that they may not be healthy to use and hence abandon them.

A simple example of abuse of a public facility would be failing to flush the toilet after use in communal facilities. It is also paramount importance that people become responsible for their own health.

While health workers stimulate interest and understanding in health matters, local people or the community must listen, take initiative and implement disease control methods in order to achieve the primary objective, which is to reduce incidences to insignificant levels which do not cause any public health problem.

Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) Estates Department keep it up,  your essential service of refuse collection and cleanliness in ablutions. You make the residents of Hwange town proud. We rally behind you.

Surely, the Hwange town is smart and tidy. Bravo to you Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) Estates Department family. God bless you all.

Chibhodo chinodikanwa kubokwa (something good should be commended).
