CHALTON Mkandla, a prominent activist associated with both the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party and the human rights organisation Ibetshu Likazulu, is currently on the run from the authorities. Mkandla has been accused of inciting public violence and is now being sought after by law enforcement agencies.

Mkandla, who played a significant role in the erection of Gukurahundi tombstone memorials across Matebeleland and Midlands, has long been a fierce advocate for justice and equality. As an active member of Ibetshu Likazulu, he has been at the forefront of the commemoration of victims of the Gukurahundi massacres, ensuring that their stories are not forgotten.

Additionally, Mkandla was an integral part of the MDC, where he tirelessly worked on recruiting new members and promoting the party’s agenda. His said dedication to the cause has made him a prominent figure within both organizations.

According to a relative, who preferred to remain anonymous fearing repercussions, Mkandla’s various activities caught the attention of the authorities. It was through his relentless activism that he drew the scrutiny of the government, and was accused of being part of a group inciting public violence. As a result, Mkandla has gone into hiding to avoid arrest and persecution.

“We understand he is wanted by the police for political activism, as a family we are also in the dark on his whereabouts, what is worrying though is that even his mobile number is no longer going through,” said the relative.

Police sources confirmed that they were interested in interviewing Mkandla on a case of inciting public violence but his whereabouts were unknown.

This is not the first time that Mkandla has encountered legal issues due to his activism. In 2005, he was detained for contravening the then Public Order and Security Act after participating in a demonstration.

After his detention Mkandla later claimed that he was subjected to torture by war veterans, further solidifying his commitment to fighting against injustice.

Human rights organizations and activists have expressed concern over Mkandla’s safety and are calling for a fair investigation into the charges leveled against him. They argue that his activities, although passionate, have always remained within the boundaries of peaceful protest, aimed at raising awareness and seeking justice for marginalized communities.

The police have not yet commented on the ongoing search for Mkandla. However, it is hoped that a peaceful resolution can be achieved, ensuring Mkandla is granted a fair trial and his rights are protected.

As the search for Chalton Mkandla continues, the case has ignited a larger conversation regarding the freedom of expression and activism in the country. It serves as a reminder that the struggle for social justice can come at a high personal cost, as activists like Mkandla face the threat of persecution for their unwavering dedication to their cause.
