BEITBRIDGE Rural District Council last week commissioned a new secondary school in Beitbridge West which will help children in Masera area who were forced to travel more than 20 kilometres to the nearest school.

The local authority chief executive officer Mr Peter Moyo said Masera Secondary School was an initiative of the local community which saw the need to have their children access education easily.

“Masera Secondary School is a brain child of the community members of Masera Ward 7 in Beitbridge West constituency. It was the community members who realised the need to have a secondary school in the ward. The children, after completing Grade 7, from schools like Ndambe and Mtshilashokwe could only go to Swereki Secondary which is 22 kilometres away or Shashe Secondary which is 27 kilometres away,” he said.

He said establishment of the school was also likely to limit the number of young people who are crossing the border into South Africa.

“For the construction of the school the 250 families contributed 20 rand each which was used to buy 70 packets of cement which was used for brick moulding. Some of them also provided labour while local commercial farmers provided river sand.”

“We also got a donation of 78 packets of cement from Pingwe conservancy project, World Vision and Limpopo Area Developmental Programme which added most of the required material to construct four classroom blocks, teachers’ houses and blair toilets,” said Mr Moyo.

He said in the meantime the school was offering Maths, Venda, English, Geography, Ndebele, Science, English literature and some tech-vocational subjects.

Mr Moyo said there were also other projects underway in the district.

“Now that Masera Secondary has been commissioned the council is now concentrating on the following schools in Beitbridge West constituency which are Mapane Primary School in Ward 8 near Shashe, Nobe Primary School in Ward 10 and Mutangamtshena Secondary in Ward 11,” he said.
