A one-year and three months-old baby was killed after being run over by a car while he was sleeping on a pile of groundnuts at the edge of a maize field in Summerton, Masvingo.
Emmanuel Mushayi of Kwasira Village, Chief Mazvihwa had been left by his mother Princess Murira (18) sleeping while she was working in the fields when Jameson Mushangwe, who was driving a Toyota Dyna allegedly ran over him.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa urged motorists to exercise caution at all times.
“The incident occurred at Island Farm in Summerton on 2 April at around 2pm when Mushangwe who was driving a Toyota Dyna drove the car at the edge of the field over a heap of ground nuts when he crushed the baby.
“Mushangwe was stopped by Murira after she realised that he had driven over the heap where she had left her baby.
“The baby was rushed to Masvingo General Hospital where he died upon arrival. He had sustained head injuries,” he said.
