MORE than 400 orphans in Bulawayo were treated to an early Christmas when Omama Bosizo hosted a party for them yesterday.

The party was held at Bulawayo Central Brethren- in-Christ Church, where orphans from different divisions of the church gathered to celebrate the day. It was a magnificent occasion where children drawn from various parts were fed rice and chicken and given Christmas presents. The children were excited as they participated in various activities which included singing, dancing and Bible verse recitals.

In an interview with Sunday News, chairperson of Omama Bosizo, Mrs Janet Sithole, said although they were happy with the response, the Christmas party was no longer as glamorous due to the prevailing economic situation.

“Due to the economic situation this year we have a reduced number. This year we have 450 orphans present unlike some years where we have had over 800 children attending the party. This is not our first Christmas party. We started in 2010 when I decided to encourage women from the church that instead of holding mothers’ Christmas party let us treat the orphans instead,” said Mrs Sithole.

Mrs Sithole said the orphans they had were part of the Brethren-in-Christ Church but in future they were hoping to include orphans from outside the church.

“So far the orphans that are present today are all part of the church but with time we hope if things in the country change we will be able to incorporate all orphans from different churches,” she said.

She said donations for the Christmas party were from the corporate world and church members.

“We have been getting donations from Arenel, Edgars, Masiyephambili Junior and individuals from the church.
