POLICE are fully behind the proposal to ban public transport operators from driving at night as most fatal accidents occur during the night, a senior police officer said yesterday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Annual Police Commissioner’s fanfare held at White City Stadium, national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said they supported the motion to ban night driving as most fatal accidents in the country occur at night.
“As police we really support the proposal and we hope the legislators move with speed in making sure it is tabled. Statistics have proved that a good number of fatal accidents occur during the night,” she said while making reference to the King Lion bus accident, the Kamative and Mvuma accidents that claimed quite a number of lives.
Snr Assnt Comm Charamba said vision was always blurred during the night as there would be a number of heavy vehicles that have a tendency of encroaching into other lanes adding that human error was among the major causes of road traffic accidents.
It was at the same event that Snr Assnt Comm Charamba stressed the need for police officers to uphold the highest levels of integrity in the discharge of their duties. She said the police had zero tolerance to corruption and would continue flushing out bad apples from within the police force.
“We want our police officers to uphold the highest levels of integrity. We have a zero tolerance to corruption but this is not to say there are no bad apples. To maintain our standards we have continued to deal decisively with corruption within the police force by flushing out those that are found on the wrong side of the law,” she said adding that members of the public should also play their part in the fight against corruption that she said was eating the moral fibre.
The fanfare was held under the theme “ZRP serving and safeguarding peace and security in grace, stability and nationhood”.
She further called on churches to travel during the day and to use roadworthy vehicles and avoid overloading when going for their church meetings.Snr Assnt Comm Charamba said she was delighted by the response from the public towards the annual entertainment show.
“We are happy to be hosting this here for the second time. We appreciate the support from members of the public and artistes, most of whom we now consider as family. We have decided to make this event an annual event that will be held in Byo as we are happy with the support. We also want to thank the artists who have taken part and made this event a success,” she added.
A draw was contacted and those that were lucky walked away with various prizes ranging from a smart phone, stove, fridge, generator and four cars.
The function was attended by Deputy Commissioner General of Police Levy Sibanda who was the guest of honour.
