Police in Nkayi are seeking the arrest of woman who is accused of public indecency after she is said to have been openly engaging in a same sex relationship with a fellow villager.

Nomthetho Mpofu from Sivomo School in Nkayi under Chief Tshugulu and her partner, Caroline Ngwenya are further said to have attempted to make false reports of having been raped in a bid to stop the people who had saw them engaging in sexual intercourse from exposing them.

The alleged Lesbian couple

Mpofu is reported to have gone into hiding after she learnt that Ngwenya had since been arrested.

“Information that has reached us is that Mpofu and Ngwenya had been engaging in a lesbian affair in the villa“ge for a long period. In the day in concern they were reportedly caught while having sex. Knowing that their affair had now been exposed they then made false claims in Chief Tshugulu’s Court claiming that the people who had caught them had actually raped them.

“Further investigations however revealed that in fact the allegations were false and instead a charge of public indecency was opened against the two. Ngwenya was arrested at her homestead while Mpofu’s whereabouts are not known,” said a police source.

Police requested members of the public who might know the whereabouts of Mpofu to report to the nearest police.

Villagers interviewed claimed the two had been openly engaging in the lesbian affair for a long period, a move that has been viewed as uncultural.

“Chief Tshugulu had been getting a number of complaints from villagers regarding the conduct of the two ladies. Unfortunately, until this time when they were caught in the act , there has been no evidence of the affair.

“They attempted to claim.that they were raped but we all know that they were trying to prevent being exposed. Mpofu disappeared together with her child after her partner was arrested we do not know where she is,” said a villager who identified himself as a Mr Ncube.

Zimbabwe is one of the least accepting countries in the world for gay, lesbian and transgender people. A 2006 revision to the country’s criminal code expanded the penalty for sodomy to include acts that “would be regarded by a reasonable person as an indecent act”.
