REPAIRS to a major bridge at Shagari (Ward Seven), Lower Gweru in the Vungu Constituency are nearing completion with the bridge set to be commissioned at the end of next month.

Vungu Constituency Member of Parliament, Cde Omega Sibanda yesterday said the bridge, known as Sobakhwenyana, was being repaired by the District Development Fund (DDF), a Government institution which was also funding the whole project.

Cde Sibanda said the bridge was last attended to in 1982, and had since been damaged making it unusable. He said schoolchildren and the general public were having difficulties in crossing the river during the rainy season.

“I asked for funding as the MP of the area so that the bridge can be rebuilt as it was in a very bad state and was no longer usable. Schoolchildren were failing to cross the river during the rainy season, cars could not cross the river and in fact, the whole community was negatively affected.

Those with agricultural produce could not easily cross to sell their things and even accessing health and other social centres was a problem. But I am grateful to President Mngangagwa who listened to our plea and DDF came in to rebuild the bridge,” he said.

He added that Government was also funding the resealing of the road from Gweru to Maboleni.

“The Second Republic, led by the listening President has also started to work on the 32km stretch of the road from Gweru to Maboleni. As we speak, resealing has started so movement will be easier on a tarred road.

“This will enable economic activities and like President Mnangagwa always says, no one will be left behind in development and for sure, Lower Gweru people and the entire Vungu Constituency is not being left behind,” he said.
