RHINOS became the first team to register a win in the 2022/23 Logan Cup season after winning their four-day cricket match against Pro50 Champions Mega Market Mountaineers by 25 runs with a day to spare yesterday.

Batting first, in the first innings Rhinos were bowled out for 280 and managed to bowl out  Mountaineers for 271 in their first innings as well. Rhinos went on to score 228 all out in the second innings and managed to clean up their opponents to 212 to register the first win of the season.

With a first innings score of 92 runs not out, Kiran Carlson scored 35 in the second innings while Eddie Byrom was the top scorer in the second innings for Rhinos with 61 runs on the board while captain, Tarisai Musakanda made 37 runs in the second innings as Rhinos.

Wellington Masakadza took the second five wicket haul of the season for Mountaineers in the second innings of the match, finishing with figures of 5/37 in his 14 over spell while pace bowler Victor Nyauchi took three wickets, same as the first innings of the match.

A fighting second innings half century from Tony Munyonga was not enough to take Mountaineers through the finish line in an interesting match. Munyonga top scored with 89 runs in the second innings. The national team player, however, could not find support from other batters.

Timycen Maruma was the second leading run scorer for Mountaineers in the second innings with 24 runs off 16 deliveries as they could not hang on for the win. Tafara Chingwara and Carl Mumba took three wickets each for Rhinos while Ryan Burl and Trevor Gwandu had two each to guide their team to victory on day three.

Chingwaru was voted player of the match. In the other match, Eagles have to dig deep to win the match on the final day (today) as Southern Rocks have put up a fight in the second innings with the bat. Eagles scored a mammoth 517 in the first innings and went on to bowl out their opponents for just 167 runs.

In the second innings after posting 99-4, Eagles declared their innings leaving Rocks needing 550 runs for the win. A fighting half century from Cephas Zhuawo, who fell for 52 runs and a solid stand between Brian Mudzinganyama and Ben Curran has the match open to all possible three results.

At stumps on day three, Rocks were on 143-1 needing 307 runs to win in the final day of the match which is today. — Follow on Twitter @brandon_malvin
