THE Sports and Recreation Commission is engaging the Zifa leadership over the football body’s electoral crisis that was precipitated by failure to hold the 2017 annual general meeting on time.

Zifa and its affiliates are scheduled to hold elections this year but will only be holding its congress on Saturday, where an electoral committee is set to be appointed to oversee the elections. In a statement issued late Friday, SRC acting director general, Joseph Muchechetere said his organisation was in the process of engaging Zifa to offer them advice on how to properly handle the electoral process for all Zifa structures in line with the football body’s constitution.

“We wish to make it clear to Zifa or any other Sport and Recreation organisation that we expect them to operate within the confines of their respective constitutions, provisions of the SRC Act, which is the prevailing National Law on the Organisation and Administration of Sport in Zimbabwe. Any deviation from the above requirements will be unacceptable and we will not hesitate to step in and restore order,” read the statement.

Zifa failed to hold its AGM in December last year after councillors declined to proceed citing failure to adhere to the constitution as the secretariat did not issue the stipulated 60-day notice. The football governing body’s affiliates’ elections are staggered beginning with area zones, followed by provinces with regions coming next and the PSL while the Zifa executive elections are scheduled to be held at the end of March.— @rasmthembo
