THE Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Cde Monica Mutsvangwa, has implored Zimbabweans to be vigilant ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities by preventing the possible spreading of Covid-19.

In her Christmas message, Minister Mutsvangwa said it was the responsibility of every Zimbabwean to help in combating the disease.

She said the second wave of the pandemic is raging and claiming more lives therefore there is a need for citizens to complement Government efforts in curbing the possible spread of the pandemic during the festive season.
Minister Mutsvangwa said the disease has not yet receded.

“I am here to tell you that Covid-19 is still raging and is claiming more lives far from claims that its strain has receded. The disease remains the number one enemy to human health it is killing both young and old and it continues to threaten our very existence.

In keeping with World Health Organisation standards the Zimbabwe Government has over the year contained the disease by scaling up testing, contact tracing, surveillance and enforcement of prevention measures.

However, you and I should continue to play our part. Do not let your guard down. Do it for your family and loved ones, do not be the one spreading the disease to them,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa’s comments come as the second wave of the pandemic is wreaking havoc in neighbouring South Africa where a new variant of Covid-19, 501.V2 has been discovered.

Zimbabwe recently opened its borders to cross-border travellers and there are possibilities that the country may import the new variant if stringent protocols are not followed.

The country is expecting an increased human traffic ahead of Christmas and New Year’s holidays while cross-border traders are looking forward to cashing in on the festive season.
