REFORMED Church University (RCU) has produced a dictionary in Braille for the visually impaired after securing a
$50 000 grant from the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary, Science and Technology Development, an official has said.
Addressing graduates during the university’s second graduation ceremony which saw 122 students conferred with degrees at Morgenster Teachers’ College campus in Masvingo on Friday, RCU Vice-Chancellor Professor Wiseman Magwa said the university is working towards addressing the needs of special groups in Masvingo and beyond.
Those who graduated were from the faculties of Commerce and of Education. He said the Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) Braille dictionary designed to help the visually impaired and the partially sighted individuals will be officially launched later this year.
“I am pleased to announce that RCU was awarded a grant of $50 000 by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development to produce a SRH dictionary for visually impaired people and a large print version for the partially sighted individuals,” said Prof Magwa.
He said the university has worked tirelessly using its staff in consultation with some organisations which work with people living with disabilities and a headway has been made in coming up with the “unique” dictionary.
Prof Magwa also said the university was on the verge of completing the construction of an administration block at its permanent site, about 10 kilometres along Masvingo-Mashava Road and will move to the campus before year end. He said since the university’s opening in 2012, there has been a phenomenon growth in enrolment. There are 600 students studying at the university up from 420 when the university opened.
