Curran to guides Rocks against Tuskers Ben Curran celebrates his hundred

A BEN Curran unbeaten ton guided Southern Rocks through to a competitive total on day one of their encounter against Tuskers at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Curran’s 134 runs not out from 261 deliveries was the only notable score as Rocks were bowled out for 282 in 95.3 overs on the first day of the encounter. Rocks’ specialist batsmen could not put notable scores on the board with the second leading run scorer being Cuthbert Kamusoko who scored 42 runs after coming in to bat at number nine. Openers, Brian Mudzinganyama and Blessed Muzite fell for 18 and 22 runs respectively.

The only other batsmen to cross double figures for the Masvingo based Rocks side was Tafadzwa Tsiga who finished with 22 runs.

Spinner, Ainsley Ndlovu starred with the ball for the home side, Tuskers taking four wickets, conceding 70 runs in 34 overs. Milton Shumba and Hamidullah Qadri claimed two wickets each.

Tuskers did not bat on day one as the last Rocks wicket to fall, that of Sydney Murombo concluded the day’s play.

Meanwhile, in the match between Mountaineers and Rocks which also started yesterday at Old Hararians, Timycen Maruma missed out on a ton for Mountaineers after he fell for a well batted 91 runs off 105 deliveries. Spencer Magodo also scored a half century finishing on 63 runs as Rocks ended day one on 281-9

Michael Chinouya took three wickets for Rhinos while Tafara Chingwara and Brandon Mavuta took two.

The other scalps were taken by Antum Naqvi and Johnathan Campbell.

In other cricket news, the Zimbabwe Under-19 cricket teams is in action today at the 2023 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa when they square off against England Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

On Tuesday, the Kelis Ndhlovu captained Young Lady Chevrons square off against fellow African side Rwanda at the North West University Oval, the same venue for the clash with Pakistan two days later.
