LOCAL football legends are aiming at unearthing the next generation of soccer stars and have set up a football school of excellence which will focus on junior players.
Recruitment for the academy begins tomorrow (Monday) with registration taking place at Zifa House and exclusively reserved for players aged 12 and below.
Gibson Homela, Cosmas Zulu, Lawrence Phiri, Colsen Mabeza and Douglas Mloyi have come together to create the Legends School of Excellence which they intend turning into a fully fledged academy that will produce players from across the country.
Homela revealed they are holding their first registration tomorrow at Zifa House and are looking at enrolling 48 players.
He said they would be partnering one primary and one secondary school, which would be used as central points for the academy as per Fifa regulations adding they are motivated by the lack of a “proper” academy in Bulawayo to create the school.
“Registration is on tomorrow and we urge all those who want to see their children rise to become future stars to come and register. After the registration we will then have trials next weekend at Crescent Sports Club where we select those we will work with going forward.
“There is a lack of a formal football school on in Bulawayo so we decided to play a role in setting up one.
“We understand football has evolved over time and things are now done differently and to produce a fine footballer you need to take them through several stages and dedicate a certain amount of time to training and also include the education aspect,” said Homela.
