‘I will do what Knowledge did at Kaizer Chiefs’ Knox Mutizwa

The Sunday News

SOUTH Africa-based footballer Knox Mutizwa has expressed his desire to follow in the footsteps of his hero and Warriors captain Knowledge Musona and play for Kaizer Chiefs.

Musona’s transfer to Chiefs several years ago inspired many Zimbabwean players to believe in themselves, according to Mutizwa. Musona is now based in Belgium.

The Golden Arrows marksman has nine league goals so far this season and is chasing down top scorer Gabadinho Mhango (Orlando Pirates) for the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award.

“I think Knowledge Musona played quite a good role at Kaizer Chiefs and scored some important goals so everyone in Zimbabwe wanted to come to South Africa because of Musona,” he said.

Mutizwa, a former Highlanders player and Warriors squad member, who has scored 32 goals in 99 appearances for Arrows in all competitions, says as much as he is not that far away from Musona’s goals tally he would like to emulate him and join Chiefs in the future.

Musona, who recently chose to sign for KAS Eupen over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, scored 40 goals in 88 appearances in all competitions for Amakhosi.

“I don’t think he scored as many goals as I did right now, I don’t know maybe, I’ll check out and see, but I don’t think I’m too far. One day I will play also for Kaizer Chiefs, I will do what he did. I’m okay here at Arrows but obviously every player wants to play for a big team. Right now I’m comfortable at Arrows, everything is going well, but in future . . .”

Meanwhile, Mutizwa admitted that at times he felt he was letting his coach Steve Komphela down by missing scoring chances.

Nonetheless, he has become an important player for the team as he often gets important goals.

“Yeah, sometimes I do let my self down, because there are certain chances that I’ve missed and when I’m watching them on television I realise that, eish, I should’ve done better and scored those goals.

“I feel the pressure that I’m letting myself down sometimes. I think if you go back and watch those chances you must tell yourself that if I can work well in training, I can do better in the official match.

“That’s how you pick yourself up and say the next chance I will convert. People forget about missed chances if you score one goal.”

Being in a business where results can decide your fate, Mutizwa is grateful to coach Komphela for his patience with him and promises to repay him for his faith.

“I think he’s been patient with me. We have many top strikers in the team. He’s been good to me and I appreciate him a lot. I will repay him one day.” —Kickoff/Sports Reporter.
