THE Minister of State for Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Cde Richard Moyo has advised farmers in the province to invest in dipping so that they do not lose cattle to avoidable and preventable tick-borne diseases.

Speaking at the Sustainable Diptank Certification ceremony held at a local hotel in Bulawayo last week, Minister Moyo said investing in diptanks will save farmers more money.

“Investing in dipping is not an option, it is a must. Otherwise we will lose more money when we lose cattle to otherwise preventable diseases such as January disease and gall sickness. Furthermore, in the context of climate change and droughts, we need to invest in sustainable supplementary feeding of our livestock. Therefore, as we undertake Gatshompo/Pfumvudza, which is important for food security, lets also grow fodder crops for our livestock,” he said.

Minister Moyo said sustainable dip tank management is part of the long chain of initiatives to attain sustainable community development, as it is community driven and organised at the dip tank level.

He assured the farmers that they will always get Government support and encouraged them to purchase dipping chemicals from authorised dealers.

“Government will continue to support farmers with other services such as vaccinations against foot and mouth disease provision of extension services through the Department of Veterinary Services will be strengthened. I urge you to play your part by getting organised at the dip tank level and taking control of your herd by buying dipping chemicals for your cattle from authorised dealers,” he said.

He commended dip tank associations that have managed to buy enough dipping chemicals to ensure that they dip their cattle for a whole year. He said this will see the national herd not being lost to tick-borne diseases and the quality of beef and hides not being downgraded.

Cde Moyo also appreciated efforts being done by the Department of Veterinary services for supporting community-driven diptank management. And also, the traditional leaders and local authorities in promoting Government’s vision of the improved quality of life of the people.

Various diptank associations in the Matabeleland North and South provinces received certificates. For Umguza certificates were given to Calsvale, Majindane and Mindora. In Nkayi certificates were awarded to Tshugulu, Sikhobokhobo and Mateme. Mangwe, Mzola and Irisvale Village 2 were awarded for the Umzingwane district. Lastly, for Bubi district the certificates were awarded to Loxely Comb, Red Sale and Nkenyane.

In pursuit of Vision 2030 and building of resilience in communities to various shocks such as climate change and livestock diseases, Government is working with various development partners. These include UNDP, ZRBF-MELANA, UKAid, EU and the Swedish Government among others.
