IN a first of its kind villagers in Tsholotsho South constituency on Friday converged on Mbamba Business Centre for a colourful sports gala that was organised and bankrolled by their Member of Parliament, Zenzo Sibanda.

Mukandume were crowned champions after defeating Tsholotsho Pirates 4-2 on penalties in the final which involved four teams who clashed from the semi-final stage. On their way to the final Tsholotsho Pirates beat Tshefunye 1-0 thanks to a solitary goal by Liberty Phiri while victors Mukandume negotiated their way past Shaba in the second semi-final winning by the same score line courtesy of an Innocent Bindura second half goal.

The two finalists were deadlocked nil-all after regulation time and went straight into the lottery with Pirates losing the contest after two of their players missed their spot kicks. In netball Tshefunye thumped Tsholotsho Pirates Queens 14-8 to walk away as champions. The Gala, which will now be an annual event, is open to teams from the 12 wards in the constituency.

Mukandume walked away with a soccer kit and $250 cash prize while the runners-up pocketed $150 and a kit. Netball victors Tshefunye took home $60 in cash, a kit and a ball. Buoyed by the success of the outing Sibanda announced that they would stage another tournament in December.
