FORMER Highlanders expatriate coach Erol Akbay has resigned from a job with low league South African club barely a month into the job.

Netherlands-born Akbay arrived at the GladAfrica Championship side Tshakhuma Tsha Madzhivhandila on October 9 to replace Serbian mentor Moma Medic, who was sacked on September 20 and recently won his case to be paid three months’ outstanding salaries.

The 53-year-old Akbay, who previously coached at Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League clubs Ngezi Platinum and Highlanders, had initially signed until January. But he says unprofessionalism at the Venda-based club, which also roped in David Mathebua earlier this season, was too much for him.

“Ja, ja, that’s true. It was not working with this club,” Akbay told KickOff.com.
“It was too many different things about the professionalism in the club. I decided this is not going nowhere together. And that’s why I decided to stop here.

“We signed actually only for three months to see if we can work together or not, and see what we can do till the end of the season, and then decide on a long-term contract.

“But I see after one month already this is not working. Let’s not wait till the end of the season, let’s stop now.”
