THE country’s most followed horse race, the OK Grand Challenge pencilled in for 1 June at Borrowdale Racecourse in Harare is around the corner.

Mashonaland Turf Club are yet to release the stake money but according to the racing manager Betina Gurajena nominations are due soon.

“Nominations for the OK Grand Challenge will be accepted on 15 May while the final field will be made available on 20 May.

“As usual this is one of the ‘Big Three’ races we hold on an annual basis, as such we expect most of the runners taking part in the Castle Tankard to roll-over to the OK Grand Challenge that includes a runner from South Africa,” said Gurajena.

As part of preparations for the event the giant retail shop has launched a promotion nationwide where shoppers are participating.

The climax of the event will be the horse race set for the racecourse where thousands of fans are expected to converge on 1 June to witness the momentous occasion.

The OK Grand Challenge race is run in conjunction with Mashonaland Turf Club and is unique in that it draws jockeys and horses from other countries such as South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.
