THE National Taskforce on Covid-19 will tomorrow deliberate on the reopening of the borders and other ports of entry following a downward trend in cases which resulted in the relaxation of lockdown measures.

In an interview, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the taskforce will meet to get feedback on the assessment done on the borders’ preparedness before deliberating on the way forward.

“The taskforce is meeting on Monday where it will get feedback on the borders to see the way forward. There are officials who were assessing the situation at borders during the week (last week),” she said.

The country closed its borders amid a burgeoning second wave of Covid-19 infections which resulted in mounting deaths at the beginning of the year, a development which was attributed to recklessness by holidaymakers during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Government subsequently enforced stringent lockdown measures which ended on 1 March, which included the closure of all non-essential businesses, a strict curfew and closure of all land borders with exemptions for returning residents and commercial freight.

President Mnangagwa relaxed the regulations this month which also saw schools and churches being opened while ban on inter-provincial traveling was lifted and public transport operators resuming operations.
