IN a bizarre turn of events, a 32-year-old Bulawayo man fell fast asleep in a goat pen in a village in Inyathi after gaining access to steal goats.

The development has sent tongues wagging in the community with locals suspecting the use of juju.

The suspect was apprehended by the villagers who effected a citizen’s arrest while still in his sleep. On being searched, he was found with two knives in his pocket.

This was heard when Sipho Moyo (32) of House Number 2203 Pumula East, Bulawayo appeared before Inyathi magistrate Mr Ropafadzo Manyande.

He was convicted on his plea of guilt and sentenced to 12 months of which six were suspended for five years on condition that he is not within that period convicted of a similar offence.

He will serve an effective six-month jail term.

Prosecuting, Mr Farirai Chakamanga told the court that on 8 March 2024 at around 6am, the complainant, Ms Siphathisiwe Ndlovu instructed her domestic worker to release the goats from the pen.

On opening the goat pen the herd boy found Moyo fast asleep in the goat pen.

It was the State’s case that the herd boy informed the complainant who went on to inform other villagers who gathered and apprehended him while still in his sleep.

The court was further told that Moyo was searched and found in possession of two knives.

He was interviewed by the villagers and he divulged that he came to the particular goat pen from Bulawayo with his friend who is still at large.

Moyo, the court heard, told the villagers that he fell asleep when he entered the goat pen and his friend fled and left him sleeping there.

He was handed over to the police by the villagers leading to his appearance in court.
