EXTEND the scope of your home by turning it into a nice retreat . . . make it a home away from home.

Nontokozo Mlotshwa, a homeowner introduces us into a new technique of creating a rustic vibe into your home.

Nowadays anything with a rustic look is deemed outdated by most people, however, Mlotshwa uses it to make her home look beautiful.

She said there is no need of going around looking or picking old items, there are various ways to achieve a rustic look at the same time being subtle.

“I know most homeowners these days only want new items in their home, old or traditional things cramp their style. But that does not mean they should not get the look that they desire for their homes.”

“Instead of leaving pipes or wires uncovered to achieve a rustic look you can improvise by using anything with a reddish-orange shiny texture and look like copper,” she said.

Mlotshwa added that its reddish-orange or brownish-orange shine makes it a perfect touch for any home décor regardless of theme and style.

“Copper elements can make your home feel warm and look unique when used correctly but when overused you will be turning your home into a welding shop.

“Counter tops and sinks are the best places to start with when you want to achieve a rustic look and feel. This means that they can be easily used in kitchens and bathrooms regardless of style and theme,” she continued.

“In terms of sink styles, with copper sinks it does not matter which style your bathroom is, they extend the scope from traditional drop in sinks to open farm sinks and stylish vessels.”

She said homeowners should take into account the amount of copper they use and make sure that whatever they bring into their home is in sync with everything in their space.

“We don’t want a scenario whereby whatever you bring into your home stands out on its own without complementing anything. Hence, I suggest using a little copper here and there like on accessories to give your space fresh feel.”

“Frame your portraits, mirrors and paintings with a reddish-orange colour to give your home a warm ethnic vibe . . . hang them strategically on your walls to make them noticeable,” said Mrs Mlotshwa.

She added that the brownish-orange look on your walls is also a beautiful look that can bring a rustic look to your home.

“Instead of painting your walls leave the bricks exposed to infuse an industrial style into your décor without exceeding your budget,” she said.
