A 28-YEAR-OLD man who resides at Wankie Mine compound was last Wednesday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for stealing electricity cables.
Regional magistrate Mr Mark Dzira sentenced Hamilton Munkuli to 10 years imprisonment for cutting and stealing electricity cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Power Company which are used for generating, transmitting and distributing electricity.
Representing the State, prosecutor Ms Jamesina Erica Makanza alleged that on 23 February Munkuli and his accomplice Blessed Sibanda, who is still at large, went to Galpex Mine at around 9PM were they cut two cables.
The matter came to light the next morning around 6am when a mine worker found the electricity cables cut and recalled a conversation he overheard of the two culprits conversing on how lucrative copper cables were on the market.
The informant joined forces with one of the mine workers and together they tracked shoeprints which led them to the homestead of Munkuli.
The accused person was interviewed by the two and later led them to a nearby bush where copper cables weighing 18,5 kilogrammes and worth US$200 were recovered. -@5_Shannico
