TUSKERS continued with their brilliant form in the Pro50 Championship when they thrashed Mountaineers by nine wickets in a rain affected match played at Takashinga Cricket Club in Harare yesterday.
Skipper Brian Chari struck a brilliant unbeaten 102 off 72 deliveries opening the batting for Tuskers, his innings being the cornerstone of his team’s victory. The match was reduced to 24 overs due to a rain delay in the capital city and Mountaineers managed 181/6, their scorer being Richmond Mutumbami with 55 runs. Left arm spinner Sean Williams picked up three wickets for 39 runs in five overs.
The Tuskers run chase was given the much-needed impetus by Chari and Cunningham Ncube’s opening stand of 117 runs. While Ncube fell for 39, Chari stood firm, dispatching seven fours and six sixes and put on an unbeaten 66-run stand with Craig Ervine (38 not out) for the second wicket to steer their team to victory.
Across town at Harare Sports Club, Eagles defeated Rhinos by nine wickets in a match that was reduced to 25 overs because of a rain delay.
Yesterday’s win leaves Tuskers as the only team yet to taste defeat in the Pro50 Championship, with the Bulawayo-based franchise now on top of the log, followed by Mountaineers and Eagles.
