THE Lwendulu Leo Club of Hwange has raised more than $1 500 through a number of fund-raising initiatives to be used for medical expenses, travelling and general upkeep of a 15-year old Hwange cancer patient, Shalom Nyathi.

Shalom’s case was first brought to light through an article in the Sunday News edition of 29 January 2017 after an SOS call by a Good Samaritan in Hwange, Ms Trinity Chipembere who was touched by the girl’s plight.

Leo Club president, Mr Praise Moyo, said as youths they felt it prudent to devote time and energy to fund-raise and appeal for help within Hwange, with their overtures culminating into the latest donation of $150 and groceries by parents and teachers of Coalfields Primary School in the mining town.

“Shalom’s case is a very touching one, hence we decided to go a step further as youths and I am happy that the fruits of our fund-raising efforts has culminated in this latest donation from this school. Our previous collective efforts have seen us getting valued assistance from the Hwange Colliery’s Estates department and general public besides our own individual donations but more is still needed for Shalom’s second trip to Harare for review on 23 March (Thursday). We have also had car washing sessions in town in conjunction with Premier Motor Spares, Concept Events and Ntex Hospitality and sponsorship sheets are being delivered physically around Hwange and through social media under the #Save Shalom Nyoni campaign,” said Mr Moyo.

Shalom’s right hand was amputated by oncologists during her first visit to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals last month to prevent further spread of the cancer.

Biopsy tests were also run and the results are expected when she goes for the review. Other efforts to assist Shalom include sourcing a wheelchair to assist her with mobility. Her condition started in 2014 but she was not taken to hospital then because of her late mother’s church beliefs.
