THE Magwegwe Development Trust yesterday launched community projects targeted at providing vulnerable and disadvantaged members of Old Magwegwe in Bulawayo with skills to start projects to sustain their lives.

Speaking at the launch, trustee Mrs Nokuthula Ndebele said the organisation was targeting the most vulnerable groups in society like women and children who have many responsibilities but have no money.

“We are looking at the most vulnerable groups in the community, Old Magwegwe has people living with disabilities, the elderly, young children and sick people who need to be taken care of. These people have many responsibilities some can’t even take their children through school, hence we chose this place because we knew they needed our help the most,” said Mrs Ndebele.

She said the MDT was being funded from the US Ambassador’s Self Help Programme, and they used the money to start community projects.

“We were given $6 350 last year, and we used that money to start two projects. The first project was a women’s training, where women were being taught how to make re-usable menstrual pads and the project has been completed. For the second project we bought 50 toilet seats and we have so far managed to fit 22 chambers in those houses which have been using pit latrines since 1962,” she said.

Magwegwe representative in the National Assembly, Mr Anele Ndebele said the project was set to transform lives of people in the area.
