THE Government has come to the rescue of the Zimbabwe Aquatic Union after securing accommodation for swimmers that would be representing the country at the CANA Zone IV Championships.

The championships are set to run from 16 to 19 February at the City Pool in Bulawayo. There had been an outcry as parents had to fork out funds to accommodate their children taking part in the tournament.

Minister of Sport and Recreation Makhosini Hlongwane confirmed that they had chipped in because it was a high profile event involving 14 countries across the region.

“This is a high profile event and naturally as Government we have to come in and assist where we can, unfortunately ZAU engaged us late but we are helping them,” he said.

Hlongwane said as the Government they were concerned about issues of legacy and feel the event should impact on swimming as a whole in the city. He said it would be a tragedy if ZAU would simply just hold the event for four days and fail to make an impact on the sport in Bulawayo.

“We are worried about the impact the hosting of the championships will have on the city; we are saying have pools that have not been functioning fixed? Has the hype been created around the event through having more young people in the sport?

There has to be some benefit one way or the other and we are engaging ZAU on those issues,” said Hlongwane.
