GWABALANDA tenants have vowed to break the tag of being lodgers after they officially launched a housing co-operative that is expected to see them owning houses from their monthly subscriptions.

This follows the launch of Masiphakame Lodgers Housing Co-operation in Gwabalanda, Bulawayo on Thursday.

The housing co-operative was formed two years ago by Gwabalanda B tenants with the aim of helping them realise the dream of owning houses.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch, Mr Sifiso Moyo the treasurer of Masiphakame said: “We are so happy that we have been granted permission to go ahead with our project. We are going to ensure that the project is a success.”

The co-operative consists of about 200 members and they pay US$21 per month. Masiphakame housing co-operative members told Sunday News that their prayer was to find land as soon as possible. They said with the money they have, they could start building about 50 houses if land was availed to them.

“We cannot manage to build all the members’ houses at the same time so we are planning to start by building a few and getting a house will be determined by the time that a member has been in the co-operative,” said Moyo.
