A hospital and six rural health clinics in Hwange District have received Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) so that workers can protect themselves from Covid-19 while on duty.
The material worth US$2 000 was donated by Painted Dog Conservation (PDC) and includes latex gloves, face masks, overshoes, sanitizers and infrared thermometers.
The institutions that will benefit are St Patrick’s Hospital, Songwa, Lupote, Mabale, Dete, Makwandara and Zimparks clinics.
Speaking at the donation last week, Painted Dog Conservation vice-chairperson Chief Nelukoba Dingani said the move was prompted by the desire to ensure access to health for communities in the face of Covid-19.
“The Painted Dog Conservation and its friendly partners are pleased to donate among other PPE items of latex gloves, face shields, masks, aprons, sanitizers, thermometers, gowns, buckets with taps, theatre caps, overshoes, cleaning and disinfectant materials.
“We made a similar donation last year to local frontline workers to help them to safely cope with the demands of dealing with the Covid-19.
“We operate in a very important tourism area and our people are easily exposed to the virus, so our frontline staff in the medical facilities around us and need as much protection as we can afford them,” said Chief Nelukoba.
In a speech read by the District Development Coordinator, Mr Simon Muleya, Minister of State for Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Cde Richard Moyo said the donation will go a long way in stepping up efforts to combat the spread of Covid-19.
Meanwhile, Hwange District Nursing Officer, Mrs Winnie Ngwenya said the donation came at the right time as resources to support frontline workers in the district were constrained.
