Letters to the Editor: Banning of maize sale welcome

The Sunday News

It was a very good decision when the Government banned the buying and selling of maize by greedy indivuduals and companies since the whole nation was starving while these people were making millions of dollars by exporting maize to other countries, especially Zambia.

It was very sad that the country was facing critical food shortages as a result of some corrupt people who are lining their pockets by exporting maize at the time when the country has few maize stocks left before the coming of the rainy season.

If you get into any supermarket you find that a 10kg bag of maize meal is now selling for any amount above $20 and very few people can afford that kind of money.

A family of about five people now need more than rtgs$100 to buy 50kgs of mealie meal and we hope the Government will come to the rescue because people are suffering.

I also feel that those idle farmers should lose their farms because we cannot continue suffering like this when they were given farms to produce.

The Government must reposess land which is not being utilised because we saw people rushing to be allocated land but they are not doing any activity in those farms.

The Government must also make sure that the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) pays these farmers on time to encourage them to sell their maize to the GMB and not private buyers.

Eddious Masundire Shumba,
Bulawayo.
