A HIGHFIELDS, Harare couple’s marriage is on the rocks after the wife reportedly told her husband that she is lesbian and had been forced into marriage for the past seven years.
Shamiso Chipuriro who is culturally married to Evans Maworera has since become a source of ridicule among residents in the district and has since gone into hiding after the secret was exposed.
The couple is blessed with two children, with Chupiriro falling pregnant with their first born in 2008 when she was 16-years-old, while she was doing her Ordinary Levels, and had to be forced into the marriage with Maworera.
Chupiriro’s father is a police officer based at Machipisa police Station.
According to sources close to the family, Chupiriro reportedly shocked her husband and elders within her family when she confessed being Lesbian, an act that is not culturally and legally permitted in Zimbabwe.
She reportedly claimed her family had forced her into marriage to hide the truth and also accused her husband of marital rape.
“Since she was a young girl, there have been suspicions that Shamiso was into same sex relationships but her family was largely in denial. The traditional marriage with Evans was actually an arranged marriage and she has since revealed that she was forced into accepting terms of the marriage.
“As it stands after the said confession, Shamiso has gone into hiding as she was now constantly being singled out for attack by locals in Highfields who ridiculed her and also accused her of trying to frame her husband on the marital rape charges, she is even afraid to report the matter to the police,” said the family member
A police source revealed that while Chupiriro had initially made the marital rape charges she had not cooperated with the police later, which was now meaning that she could face the risk of being charged with making a false report.
“She made the initial report but from there she has not being cooperating with the police hence there is a possibility that she was making a false report, which is what is now being investigated,” said the source.
